Quit Smoking Ways - Preplanning Activities

Most smokers admit that they would love to quit smoking and they are looking for quit smoking ways that will make it easier and as pain free as possible. There are so many quit smoking ways, products and aids on the market that it can be difficult to choose one. There is no right or wrong quit smoking way, so pick one that you are comfortable with and just do it.

Most smokers try 3-4 times to quit smoking before they succeed. Others quit smoking the first time they try. Every smoker is different and if you asked 50 ex-smokers how they quit you would probably get 50 different quit smoking ways. But every ex-smoker would agree that in order to quit smoking successfully, the first thing you need to do is make the decision to quit, no matter what. You must be dedicated to your success.

If you are a heavy smoker or have been smoking for more than 5 years, it will be very difficult to quit smoking all at once. Here are some quit smoking ways that make it easier:

  1. first make the decision to quit smoking and choose a quit date at least 30 days away;
  2. stop smoking in your house and car at least 30 days before your quit date;
  3. start to reduce your smoking at least 30 days before your quit date. Consider smoking at a regular interval, such as every hour; and
  4. begin preparing for your quit date as soon as you make the decision to quit smoking.

Smoking is both a mental habit and a physical addiction. When you quit smoking in your house and your car, you begin to separate the mental connection between smoking and these areas. It will be easier to be at home and in your car as a non-smoker. The smoke odor will also start to disappear from these areas.

Most of the cigarettes you currently smoke are out of habit. In order to begin weakening the mental habit, you should begin smoking on a schedule. By reducing your smoking and using a schedule, you accomplish two things: 1) weaken your prior mental smoking habit and 2) begin reducing your nicotine intake. This is a quit smoking way that eases your withdrawal symptoms and begins to prepare you mentally for your quit date. You are using these methods to begin to take control of your smoking habit.

There are many quit smoking ways to prepare for your quit date, as instructed in item 4 above. Here are some common ones:

  1. make a list of all the reasons that you want to quit smoking. Review the list twice daily before and after your quit date;
  2. make a list of the health risks of smoking and the benefits of quitting smoking;
  3. identify the triggers that cause you to light a cigarette;
  4. begin to indentify alternative ways of dealing with these triggers;
  5. make a list of additional activities you can do after you quit that you do not associate with smoking. These will keep your mind occupied after you quit smoking; and
  6. put together your support mechanisms and reward system, etc.

Although there are many quit smoking ways available, the most successful ones involve preplanning activities like the ones above, a quit smoking product or aid, alternative plans to deal with smoking triggers and behavior modification. You will need to avoid people, places and activities that you currently associate with smoking when you first quit smoking. Avoiding these will increase your chance of success.

A key quit smoking way is to minimize temptation, especially when you first quit. You are very vulnerable during this period and avoidance is usually the best approach. There is no need to make it harder on yourself than necessary. Make the decision, use preplanning and stick with it.

Laser Quit Smoking - The Latest Miracle Method?

March 23rd, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

There has been alot of talk lately about the use of laser treatments to quit smoking. This latest method to combat the smoking habit, involves only one treatment and claims to have a success rate of up to 70 percent. There are numerous quit smoking laser clinics popping up all over the US, as people continue to look for the easiest way to quit smoking.

This technique involves using cold laser technology to apply slight pressure on specific energy points on your body, which causes the release of endorphins. These endorphins promote a feeling of relaxation and also enhance the body’s ability to detoxify nicotine from your system. These two factors can greatly reduce your nicotine withdrawal symptoms making it easier for you to quit smoking. Although withdrawal symptoms will be reduced they will not be eliminated, so will power and determination are essential on your part.

Like other quit smoking methods, your chances for success are directly related to your desire to quit smoking. If you have not made up your mind to quit smoking, nothing is going to help you.

Add Behavior Modification

Laser quit smoking clinics boast a success rate of about 70 percent, which is higher than many other methods such as using the patch, nicotine gum, cold turkey, etc. However there are some hypnosis and herbal quit smoking products that have success rates as high as 90 percent.

Laser quit smoking techniques are more successful when combined with behavior modification. The first three days are the toughest when you are trying to quit, so you must be especially careful during this period. Try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible, avoid people that are smokers, avoid places that you normally smoke at and above all keep yourself busy. The busier you are the less you will focus on your withdrawal symptoms. Ideally you should spend time in places where smoking is not permitted: museum, library, gym and anywhere else that you can think of. You want to find places that keep you stimulated and occupied, which are also smoke-free.

If possible, solicit the help of loved ones in advance so they can help you keep your mind off of your smoking cessation. When you are tempted to light up, focus on the reasons that you want to quit smoking and get busy doing something to keep your mind occupied.

Using word seek puzzles, crosswords, reading or a hobby are also good ways to occupy yourself. I love word seek puzzles and used them as a supporting technique when I recently quit my 25+ year smoking habit. You can never have too many aids to help you quit smoking and remain a non-smoker. Before your quit smoking date, think of a few different ways or activities that you can use to modify your behavior and increase your chances for success.

Many Reasons To Quit Smoking

March 18th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Smokers today are constantly being told by friends, family and strangers that they should quit smoking. Smoking has become undesireable for social, health and personal reasons. Additionally, many states and communities are passing laws regulating where a person can smoke. People can no longer smoke in office buildings and most public places.

Many smokers feel like social outcasts because most places do not allow smoking. Many are beginning to realize that it may make sense to quit smoking.

Less then 30 years ago, very few people were against smoking. It was common to see people smoking on television and in movies, despite known health hazards. There was little or no public effort to make people quit smoking. At the time, smoking was very popular and socially acceptable. As recently as the early to mid 1990’s I was able to smoke in my office at work.

When the health risks associated with second-hand smoke were initially released, smokers were skeptical and demanded more proof before they would quit smoking around others. Despite overwhelming evidence of the dangers, smokers are still finding it very hard to quit smoking. In fact, only 25% of all pregnant women today quit smoking during pregnancy.

Smoking is an addictive habit that usually starts when a person is in their teens or early 20’s. It’s very easy to become hooked on cigarettes. Unfortunately it is not nearly as easy to quit smoking. Its a very powerful addiction.

Addiction Is Both Mental And Physical

There is a physical addiction to cigarettes that can take 1-2 weeks to work out of your system. The first 72 hours after you quit smoking is when you will experience the worse physical cravings. The remainder of the addiction is considered mental. In many respects the mental and emotional aspects of your addiction can be the most difficult to deal with and they will last a lot longer.

When smokers first quit they don’t know what to do with their hands and they also miss having a cigarette in their mouth. In order to cope with their mental craving many turn to eating or snacking, something they rarely did as a smoker. Weight gain is a common side-effect when you quit smoking. Unfortunately, many women will not quit smoking because they do not want to gain weight.

There are numerous methods to quit smoking and you have to know which one is best suited for you. Some believe that it is best to quit smoking slowly over time because that is how their cigarette addiction began. Others, like myself believe that it is best to quit smoking as quickly as possible.

Whether you choose to quit smoking quickly or slowly there are numerous products that can help you break your habit such as: hypnosis, herbs, laser techniques and nicotine substitutes, etc. Many of these products combat both the mental and physical aspects of smoking withdrawal.

Do whatever it takes to quit smoking, for the health of you and your loved ones.
