An Easy Way to Quit Smoking?
Thursday, March 29th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedUnfortunately there is no easy way to quit smoking or to break any habit or addiction. There are products on the market that can make it easier, minimize your withdrawal symptoms or remove nicotine from your body faster but that does not mean the products make it easy to quit smoking. It still requires a lot of will power, determination and support. This does not mean that it can’t be done or that you should not try and quit. Many people have successfully quit smoking for good.
In order to increase your chance of success you must make the decision to quit smoking permanently and be 100% committed to your decision, no matter what. It’s no different than losing weight, starting a fitness program or making any other major change in your life; you must be dedicated to change. Although there are many so-called easy ways to quit smoking that you see advertised, there is no miracle method that will make quitting 100% painless. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If life were that easy, we would all be thin, sober, non-smokers.
The Best Way to Quit Smoking?
There is no right way or best way to quit smoking. You need to find a method that works best for you. Before choosing your method of quitting smoking, you should do some initial preparation first. The following are factors to consider when planning the easiest quit smoking strategy for you:
- make a list of all the reasons why you want to quit smoking, be as specific as possible;
- pick a quit smoking date at least two weeks away;
- make a list of all the benefits of quitting;
- try to identify the triggers that make you light a cigarette;
- find alternative ways of dealing with your triggers that you can implement as you are going through withdrawal; and
- if possible find a support partner who will quit smoking with you, etc.
By preparing in advance, it will be easier for you to successfully quit smoking. You should review the reasons and benefits of quitting smoking as often as possible, leading up to your quit date. Consider writing these down on index cards that you keep with you during your withdrawal period. These reminders can be a source of support and make the difference between success and failure.
Do emotional factors like the health of your family affect you? Do financial factors like the cost of cigarettes and the negative effect it has on the value of your home and car motivate you? Or does the aesthetics of smelly clothes and yellow teeth make the most difference? The answers to these questions can help you find an easier way to quit smoking and to remain smoke-free for the rest of your life.
If emotions motivate you, you can place pictures of your loved ones on your desk, in your wallet and in your car as a constant reminder of why you do not want to smoke. If you are a people-person, find a support group.
Regardless of the quit smoking method you choose, put support mechanisms in place and be determined to succeed. You owe it to yourself to make it as easy as possible for you to quit smoking. Remember it only takes 21 days to create a new habit.
